Becoming parents has always been
the top priority in our lives. We knew even before we
were married that we wanted children, and never thought
getting pregnant would be any sort of a challenge.
Neither of our families had ever experienced
infertility, so naturally we assumed we'd have no
problems. However, after three long, unsuccessful years
attempting to conceive on our own, we turned to The
Center for Reproductive Health for help. We couldn't
continue without answers, without knowing whether
something was wrong.
Ironically, just before our first
appointment with Dr. Vasquez, my husband and I learned
that we were expecting. The joy we felt that day was
unlike any we had ever experienced. I remember looking
at the pregnancy test over and over again, just to make
sure I was reading it correctly. I was absolutely
elated. Immediately after learning the great news, I
drove to my husband's office to surprise him. For the
next week, we floated on clouds, telling everyone and
anyone that we were going to be parents! We were so
thankful, so thrilled.
Unfortunately, it did not take long for the greatest
high in our life to become the greatest low. Just a
week later, late in the morning on Valentine's Day and
two days after our original appointment with Dr. Vasquez
had been scheduled, I began cramping. By early that
evening, things had gotten progressively worse. Without
hesitation, we went straight to the emergency room where
they began blood work to check my pregnancy hormone
levels. We didn't really need the results; we knew in
our hearts what was happening. I will never forget my
husband climbing into the hospital bed with me, wrapping
me in his arms and doing his best to help keep me from
falling apart. We began to sob as the doctor came into
the room with the verdict. The look on her face said it
all: we had lost our baby. I started crying
uncontrollably, asking God over and over again, "Why
us?" My sweet husband literally had to hold me up as we
walked out of the hospital that night.
The
next morning we went to our OB and found out that not
only had we lost one baby, we had lost two. I had been
carrying twins. We were devastated at the loss of our
babies. Days before, we had felt like it was finally
happening for us, that our dreams were finally coming
true, that we were finally being blessed with children.
Now, we had hit our breaking point. We were truly at
rock bottom. After a few weeks of "healing," we sat down
and discussed our options. I told my husband that I
couldn't go through the pain of another miscarriage. We
decided to get help.
Again, we turned to the Center for
Reproductive Health. We had heard about other patients
of Dr. Vasquez, all of whom had nothing but wonderful
things to say about him and the Center. From the moment
we walked through those doors, we felt right at home.
Dr. Vasquez was extremely thorough and made clear that
he would find the cause of our fertility problems before
choosing a treatment. After many tests, we found out
that my husband's sperm had poor mobility and motility
and that my body failed to produce the proper amount of
progesterone. Dr. Vasquez recommended
IVF.
After much discussion and many nights of prayer, we
decided to go for it. We asked the Lord to carry out his
will through Dr. Vasquez's hands. We prayed for the
blessing of a child, for health, and for strength to get
through this trying time.
I will never forget December 27,
2007, the day we received the greatest Christmas present
anyone could ever ask for. We went to the office early
that morning for a blood test and headed home to await
the results. After many weeks of shots and the embryo
transfer a few weeks earlier, we were finally going to
find out if the treatment had worked. Later that
afternoon, we received the call which we'd been waiting
on all our lives. The
IVF
was a success: I was pregnant! I literally felt more
emotions in those few seconds than I could ever feel in
an entire year.
On July
15, 2008, our lives changed forever when we delivered
our daughter Hayden into this world. Our prayers had
been answered, our dreams had come true. Hayden is our
beautiful little miracle. We believe with every ounce of
our beings that God was there through every bit of our
journey, that He worked with Dr. Vasquez through every
aspect of our ordeal. We feel truly blessed to have
found Dr. Vasquez and look forward to returning to the
Center for Reproductive Health in a few years to give
Hayden some siblings.
